We highly recommend Embark for DNA testing (breed + health DNA test). In today's modern world, screening breeding animals for health / inherited diseases via DNA testing is a great way to ensure breeders are doing the best they can in making informed breeding choices.

With the launch of the Department of Primary Industries Code of Practice for the Responsible Breeding of Animals with Heritable Defects that cause Disease in 2009, Victorian breeders are now bound by the Act to ensure their breeding programs are set up for the long-term health and wellbeing of their breeding program.

Before Embark came on the scene, all dogs were screened through other DNA testing companies such as Advance, GTG, Orivet and ASAP.

In 2021, we made the decision to adopt Breed ID testing along with the health testing that Embark provides, instead of just the DNA health tests offered by Australian companies we were using.

Breed ID is interesting of course, but it does not play a significant part in the scheme of things and is known to have problems with accuracy.  Dogs are assessed on their health, temperament and compliance to the breed standard or development of such. As a club, there are certain breeds we wouldn't integrate into our breed due to the purpose of those breeds or faults that could be bred in that aren't in line with our goals in breed development.

There are 230+ diseases that Embark can screen for, making Embark testing the most comprehensive on the market. Please see an example of the Embark Health report here. All breeders should be able to provide this to you upon request.
